I have fretted and worried and avoided posting about the in-depth coverage of the assisted suicide conversation lately-- the topic leaves me uncomfortable, unsettled, afraid, and emotional. I have read lots and lots of posts lately affirming the pro assisted suicide perspective, and I feel compelled to add the wise and thoughtful insights of Diane Coleman, a longtime disability rights advocate, to the conversation. Diane and her husband Stephen Drake are founders of an organization called Not Dead Yet, a disability rights organization that opposes the legalization of assisted suicide. Diane and Stephen have dedicated their lives and careers to raising awareness of the ethical complications that arise when physician-assisted dying is made legal, especially for people with disabilities. As were all thinking about Brittany Maynard, I hope we can also take in the wisdom of these two thinkers. How we define dignity has an impact on our fellow human beings who live life in a deeply interdependent way (e.g., people with disabilities). Im going to press post now with a lot of sensitivity and gentleness...
