I have fun playing many genres of music, as a hired in drummer I am playing other peoples music 100% of the time. I admit I have my own touches . But structure dynamics accents and groove is usually pre written to most everything and as a hired in drummer I play for the song and the artist not myself and Ive made it my dominant source of income for the last two years . This is likely going to turn into a rant so i apologize. I hear sometimes that music has lost its soul and people are sell outs ect ect ect. I agree to most of that. In high school I didnt have bills or a need for a dependable car and losing money every time I played a gig didnt mattered. Music has always been my passion and early on I got to play a lot of racket that I was really into that had a slim chance of success and very little profit and I had the most fun when I was green and not very good . Not saying I dont have fun now. As Ive gotten older and more versatile my goal as been to make music a career but also maintain a normal home life if there is a normal home life these days. Ive had to grow and accept things and Im still growing and learning new things every day. I got to tour all last year with a great band and see things I never thought Id see and was able to pay my bills doing it. And I did it playing pop country/ alt country . I will admit this is not my favorite genre but there is no way I could have accomplished that goal doing what I was doing before that. Everyone has there own goals standards and limitations and opinions and sometimes you have to stray to create and accomplish your own . Personally I never have wanted to pursue a career in anything else. I dont tell people Im a warehouse manager for a living. I tell them Im a musician . I dont see it as selling out as much as I see it as expanding my horizons, being flexible, versatile, open minded, business minded and consistent. It really boils down to what u want . Dave grohl was on the cmas last night and his drumming was killer .
