I have had a number of radical career shifts moving to totally new industries. During the early days I follow the policy of the little owl in the following story. An American, Phil went on a holiday to India. His friends gave him a long laundry list of gifts to be brought from India, a Banarasi sari, a silk scarf, a shehnai, a Mougul miniature, Tanjore painting, a talking Indian parrot etc. etc. Being a systematic person he bought every gift but unfortunately forgot the request for a parrot. He remembered the request for the parrot when the stopped over at London en route home. He went round London pet shops looking for the parrot. He found strange birds, an albatross, a Kiwi, an ostrich, a flamingo and even a Dodo. But he could not locate a single parrot. He would not give up and found an ingenious solution to his problem. Phil went to Woolworths and bought bird feathers, paint and brushes. He bought an owlet from the pet shop. He gave it a glass of milk to drink slipping in a Mickey Finn. The owl dropped off to deep sleep. He stuck the feathers on the sleeping bird with glue and painted the feathers green. The owl looked like a bedraggled parrot which had been out on a Saturday evening binge in Sauciehall Street Glasgow and was up next morning with a bad hangover. Phil returned home and distributed the gifts. He gave the owl to Tom and said The shopkeeper told me that the parrot does talk but it is somewhat shy!. Tom took his gift happily. Feeling guilty, Phil asked Tom a few weeks later how the bird was doing . Tom answered, The parrot is doing fine. He has not talked so far, but sure he thinks a lot! I follow this policy during early days in new jobs. Listen, think and not talk!
