I have had a request for a summary/status report of my health. So here it goes In both English and Norwegian: I have been diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer, which means that I have a neuroendocrine tumor (NET) on my pancreas. NETs are tumors which develop from the hormonal (endrocrine) and nervous systems. This tumor is the only one which has been found, which means there are no visible signs of spreading anywhere in my body. Last week they took another biopsy which will be tested for has quickly the tumor’s cells are mulitiplying (Ki-67 index). This rate will determine the course of treatment and my prognosis, which the doctors agree that it looks positive. It will take 4-6 weeks to get the results. The first line of treatment for tumors on the pancreas is always surgery of some type. I will most likely have what is called the Whipple procedure. This is a very complex surgery which is over 6 hours. It generally involves removing the gallbladder, duodinanum, part of the pancreas, part of the stomach and lymph nodes. In addition the entire common bile duct is rerouted and the small intestine is connected directly to the stomach. The surgery has a recovery period of 1-3 weeks in the hospital, plus additional time at home. If my Ki-67 index is high, then I will most likely have chemotherapy in addition. The surgery will take place either July or August. My assignment now is to build up my body as much as possible to handle the operation and cut down on my recovery time afterwards. I have met with a nutrionist to help with this. In addition, I am seeing a therapist to help cope with other issues. Jeg har blitt diagnostisert med nevroendokrin kreft som betyr at jeg har en nevroendokrine svulst (NET) på bukspyttkjertelen min. NET er svulster som utvikles fra de hormonelle (nevroendokrin) og nervesystemet. Denne svulsten er den eneste som har blitt funnet, noe som betyr at det er ingen synlige tegn til spredning overalt i kroppen min. Siste uke tok de en annen biopsi som vil bli testet for hvor raskt svulsten celler deler seg (Ki-67-indeksen). Denne vil avgjøre eventuell behandlingen og min prognose, som legene er enige om at det ser positivt ut. Det vil ta 4-6 uker å få resultater. Den første linjen av behandling for svulster på bukspyttkjertelen er alltid kirurgi av noen type. Jeg vil mest sannsynlig har det som kalles Whipple prosedyre. Dette er en meget komplisert operasjon som går over 6 timer. Generelt innebærer fjerning av galleblæren, tolvfingertarmen, en del av bukspyttkjertelen, del av magesekken og lymfeknuter. I tillegg er det hele felles gallegang blir omdirigert og tynntarmen er koblet direkte til magen. Operasjonen har en frisk periode på 1-3 uker på sykehuset, pluss ekstra tid hjemme. Hvis min Ki-67 indeksen er høy, så jeg vil mest sannsynlig ha cellegift i tillegg. Operasjonen vil finne sted enten juli eller august. Oppgaven min nå er å bygge opp kroppen min så mye som mulig for å klare operasjonen og kutte ned på min utvinning tid etterpå. Jeg har møtt med en ernæringsfysiolog å hjelpe med dette. I tillegg går jeg til psykolog for å takle andre problemer.
