I have had a very busy time this week including supporting my current client, meeting new potential clients, getting booked but I think best of all was meeting up with my wonderful Doula sisters. We used to meet up regularly, maybe once a month and for some reason this has slipped and it was so good to be in their company again. We are all so different as individuals and yet so alike in what it means to us to be a doula. Being a doula to me is a true blessing. I feel so honoured to be welcomed into families/couples lives during their journey into parenthood. I love meeting couples and watching them grow in confidence as time goes on until as labour and birth approaches any fear and anxiety is replaced with excitement and anticipation. Im often asked by people what does a doula actually do? and there is no one answer. Each couple I support are unique and I support them accordingly. Pregnancy and birth is such a special and precious time and a time of much celebration. I remember when I first trained years back, the wonderful and inspiring Bushra Finch said being a doula wasnt about doing but more about being and this is something I have never forgotten. Yes I do things sometimes at a birth - massage, offer refreshments, pour water on a bump or back for hours(!), offer encouragement etc but there is so much more to being a doula - being completely woman/family focused, instinctively and subconsciously supporting them, stepping back or stepping forward, listening, smiling, giving eye contact or a wink, being there totally for the woman and her partner in whatever way Im needed
