I have had cause to reflect on life after being here for just over 73 years. My thoughts have been directed especially to our politics and the present state as I have had the opportunity to be involved either directly or indirectly over the more than fifty years where we had POPPG, DLP etc. as the main political contenders. My thoughts on the present political scenario is very disappointing indeed. My impression is that as our nation became wealthier and so the financial intakes of the politicians became more affluent the needs of the people became secondary and the financial disbursements to the politicians took precedence. Where persons entered politics in the past with little financial gain and the intention was clearly to serve and improve the lot of those they represented - that is where the fame came from - today it is obvious that it is for financial gain and political clout. The real negative changes came about, in my opinion, during the midst of the Patrick Manning era. Initially, possibly to establish himself, our politics had transparency and was people driven. In the midst of it all came that change, some even introduced into the Party itself. The "People" in the PNM became obscure and it became the dictates as seen by one man or a small group. Today with all the various political projections it remains obvious that the people come second and self aggrandizement reigns supreme. To me, it is a sad reflection of our times, especially since our people in positions have become more affluent and our political opinions or causes are only in the forefront where directly interfering with the individual or his/her needs. There is so much more one can write but will it change anything? Alvin
