I have had friends ask me, didnt you used to know Lisa Whelchel? The answer is yes I was friends with Lisa in the Summer of 1979, but would she remember me? Maybe, but probably not. She and I attended the same church in Ft. Worth, Christian Center, and on Wednesday nights we were in a small youth group together called The Ark! Every Sunday night the group of us would go out to eat and to fellowship after church as well. I was VERY infatuated with her, as were most of the guys. She was actually very shy, and quiet, and quite the opposite of her character Blaire on The Facts of Life. During that summer, the pilot episode for TFOL was produced and got accepted by NBC and the series began that fall. She was gone a lot, but we got regular updates on the progress of the show from her. I had to move fast because she was about to move to LA. I finally got the nerve to ask her if she would grant myself a date. Lisa in her sweet self, said James, I am going to be home so seldom, I want to have that time exclusively with my family! Brokenheartedly, I understood and wished her the best. The last time I saw and talked to her, NBC had just bought her a brand new Trans Am. It was black and beautiful. Her step dad owned an electrical company in Ft. Worth called Codes Electric, and she drove one of those work trucks to get around. A huge change and I couldnt help but kid her about it. From 1979 through 1985 I still hoped to reunite with her. In 1985, I went to LA to visit friends and found out she had just been at their church the night before, so I just missed seeing her there, i then came back home to Texas the following weekend and found out that the Sunday I was out there she was visiting some of our common friends here in Texas. It was at that point I finally gave up all hope of being with her and not too long after that I learned of her engagement. A few years ago, I was in the Target in Flower Mound and I passed someone who reminded me of her, and shortly after that I heard that indeed she was living in Flower Mound. I have had some ask me since now that she is divorced do I want to pursue her, and the answer is no. I wouldnt be opposed to reconnecting with her, but if it doesnt happen through the natural flow of life I got my answer in 1985. She was a very very precious individual in 1979, but I have no idea who she is today, and thats my Lisa Whelchel story.
