I have heard people state, “a new building isn’t going to improve our children’s education so why do we need a new school”. This is one of my many responses to that question. Occupations in STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) and computers are at the top of the fastest growing occupations across our country, only second to healthcare jobs. Sadly our current Middle School and High School do not support the requirements of providing 21st Century academic programs in STEM areas and computers. We have excellent teachers in our schools that have the skills and desire to teach our children but without the necessary space and resources our teachers can only do so much. The new Middle/High School will have the STEM spaces, science labs and technology necessary to educate students. STEM workers on average earn 25% more than workers in non-STEM areas. If we want our children to compete for jobs in STEM areas then WE NEED to provide the necessary resources and tools. By writing papers in English class a student can realize that they love to write and begin to work hard at becoming the best writer that they can be in hope of landing a dream job at the Washington Post but what is the chance that a student will dream about being a scientist when they don’t even have access to a working science lab at school.
