I have heard the Asantehenes wife referred to as Her Royal Highness Lady Julia Osei Tutu. This is technically wrong on several counts; -Though she is married to Otumfuo, she is not of the royal family and therefore the HRH title (which is alien to Asante anyway) is wrong. -The title Lady is also strange. The wife of Otumfuo Sir Agyemang Prempeh I, who was knighted by the British, could legitimately be called Lady. In line with British tradition, the wife of a knight goes by the title Lady. I do not know if the Lady title for Otumfuos wife derives inspiration from this precedent (albeit wrongly, given that Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has not been knighted). -The surname Osei Tutu is also incorrect, as it is her husbands stool name. There is no precedent I am aware of, where a traditional rulers wife adopts her husbands stool name as her surname upon marriage. Understanding Protocol...
