I have heard time and again from so many Connecticut residents how important the economic and environmental well-being of Puerto Rico is to the United States. With the passage of the NDAA, Congress has finally done right by Puerto Rico, enabling the federal clean-up of dangerous military munitions that have endangered residents and visitors to the island for decades. I was pleased to lead this effort as a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee. I visited Puerto Rico this weekend to see for myself the work that needs to be done—and now will be done—as a result of this law I lead in the Senate. I will work hard to assure that the Department of Defense cleans up this precious natural resource as effectively and expeditiously as possible. I also had the exciting and wonderful honor to visit the association headquarters of the 65th regiment Borinqueneers whose Congressional Gold Medal I championed.
