I have just finished working on this piece which is based on my favourite lichen designs. The fabric was dyed while I was at Nature in Art earlier on in the summer. The technique is raw machine stitched appliqué. My lovely old Bernina did groan a bit this time and showed its objection by missing a few stitches. My initial inclination was to whack it but decided to pick damsons instead. Good move! After a rest, a new needle and a re thread it behaved itself again. Ive mounted it on a linen canvas. Strong thread, a good thimble, a curved needle and a pair of blunt nosed pliers are essential kit for this job. Another little tool which is brilliant is a beautifully hand made wooden point turner. It helps to avoid the heart renching feeling when you realise you have ripped through the corner with the point of your scissors.
