I have just got myself up to date with The Massive by Brian Wood. It is a great book that you should all check out. I really enjoy reading Brian Wood books, they are always epic in scope, full of detail regarding the subject matter and he is really good at keeping focus on the story telling and not losing it. I have been reading his stuff for some time now (DMZ, Star Wars, The Massive and recently started playing catch up with Northlanders) and I love details he puts in, from made up press coverage of Captain Callum Israel to environmental scenarios and world affairs post-Crash in The Massive and his work with artists on making Northlanders feel truly gritty and….well Vikingie. All this detail got me thinking about research and more specifically what research we put into our work. The research phase for me is really important, unless I have first-hand experience of the subject I am writing about I usually spend a lot of time on the internet and in the library and that includes some sci-fi stuff I have written ensuring that the tech I am conjuring up has some kind of plausibility to it. I have been working on a comic just now which is set in Scotland during the Anglo/Saxon era and I found myself visiting stone circles, climbing hills(I bought an awesome book of walks around Bennachie and have been….slowly working my way through them), reading books at the library and emailing specialists to make sure I have the correct feel for the era (I have a meeting this time home with a dude who is the go to man about the Maidenstone, which is an important McGuffin to my story). This research is not only to do with tech, surroundings and era but also characters, my last film I was involved in I spent months researching UK police so my noir story didn’t come across too American. I want my character to fit the world and react to it just as much as I wanted the world to feel real. So after you reading all that guff above what is everyone’s feeling or their own technique when it comes to writing and research (writers and artists)………………
