I have just read Ronald Ozzy Lamolas article on the Sowetan. I agree that young people should be the main crafters of the future and I am glad that he doesnt treat the notion of economic freedom in our life time as a leprosy. But I would have liked to see more emphasis on this. Young working class people have been placed at the centre of the major battles in our society. They are after all at the receiving end of the capitalist crisis...no jobs, poor wages, precarious working conditions under labour brokers, no access to education and above all faltered aspirations. I am afraid skills and education will not resolve the main challenges confronting us. Skills will not help us get jobs, prevent capital flight or convince capitalists to reinvest the billions they are sitting on back into productive activities. Lamola is correct when he says for the ANCYL to remain relevant, it has to recommit to being a radical youth wing of the ANC, or else it will wither away with time or be abrogated by irrelevance. Whether this kind of Ancyl will be acceptable to the ANC is open to debate.
