I have just spoken to Suz. She has asked me to thank everyone for their thoughts and well wishes shown towards the horse that she is currently nursing. We did not mention yesterday what was wrong with the horse. This horse has previously suffered an immune mediated reaction to the Strangles / Tetanus vaccine - he was very ill and developed a condition known as Acute Hemorrhagic Purpura . He recovered and has since been healthy. On the 14/10/2014 he was vaccinated with the Hendra vaccine. As a precaution because he had previously shown a reaction to the Strangles/Tetanus Vaccine he was also given Anti-inflammatories in the form of an injection of Flunixin prior to his Hendra vaccination and a further 3 day course of Bute Paste after his vaccination. He has not suffered any further illness since he had the Hendra Vaccination. On Friday evening - 9/1/2015 Suz gave him his tea, took off his fly veil and tucked him in for the night - he was eating, drinking and appeared well. By the following morning he had broken out with large suppurating lesions on his head, neck and all over his cheeks - his head was puffy, itchy and his glands were swollen - he was extremely uncomfortable and depressed. The vet was called immediately - she had previously been involved in the initial reaction to the Strangles Vaccine. She was immediately extremely worried that he was experiencing another immune mediated case of Hemorrhagic Purpura. She has taken bloods, swabs and fluid samples from under the lesions - she also asked if the horse had been vaccinated for Hendra in the last 3-4 months ( which he had). She treated the horse with Dexapent and Antihistamines and cleaned the lesions and applied Flamazine Cream which has been continued throughout the night and today. His preliminary blood tests have come back showing a normal White cell count but an elevated Eosinophil count. We are waiting for the remaining results which should be available this afternoon. What is scary is that if this is definitely Hemorrhagic Purpura it is vital to find out immediately whether it is NONTHROMBOCYTOPENIC or THROMBOCYTOPENIC which means that you have a lower than average platelet count - because it was THROMBOCYTOPENIA that killed Faith - she haemorrhaged to death internally. Suz bred this horse and her vets have a complete history on him. His name is Basil Brush and he is dearly loved - for this to happen right after Faiths death is a nightmare. Please keep Basil and Suz in your thoughts. Tianna xx
