I have lots of Fall memories.... Labor Day and the last day of swimming in the pools. Summer is over.... No more late nights under the street light. School starting in September, AFTER Labor Day. The first day of school. Walking to the bus stop in the cool morning air. Fog so thick that you cant see the street ahead. Suzie, Tammy, Cindy and I all waiting for the bus. As it got colder we huddled together, squatting like chickens laying eggs, shoulder to shoulder trying to fight off the cold. Walking into school on the first day and being so excited and hoping that you were in the room with your friends. The smell of the school. Paste, paper, crayons and smelling the mimeographed sheets when they are passed out. Snack break, warm milk and a small snack. Head down on your desk as the teacher reads Rabbit Hill A Shovel for Tommy The Secret Garden Charlottes Web Where the Red Fern Grows The smell of the great rolls baking in the lunchroom. Peanut Butter no Bakes, Chili and grilled cheese. Burgers, fish sticks, mac & cheese. Hot afternoons, after cool mornings. Going home on the bus in the afternoon with the windows down. Smelling the dried leaves as they are baked in the sun. Seeing the last flowers, slowly dying as the days go from warm to cold. Finally needing to wear a sweater or jacket to school. Waiting for Halloween to come! Having a great party at school. Room Mothers with cupcakes with orange icing & Pumpkin shaped sandwichs. Bags of candy. Wax fangs and lips, chewing them till the taste is gone. Eating as fast as you can Halloween night, so you can hit every house in the neighborhood. Going Trick or Treating with just your friends and feeling free for the night! Having fun running from house to house. Leaves crunching under your feet as you run. The great smell of buring leaves. The smell of pumpkins burning as the Jack-O-Lanterns are lit.. Getting home late and having a HUGE bag of candy. Dumping it out on your bed and seeing everything that you got. Deciding what you need to take to school the next day. Trading candy and almost making yourself sick from eating so much. Days getting shorter and nights getting longer. Finally being too cold to play outside. Being able to see your breath in the air in the morning as you walk to the bus stop. November coming, Thanksgiving and going to Kenny & Beas house. December not coming fast enough. Winter is finally here. The trees are bare, the last flowers are gone.The smell of fireplaces burning, and the great smell of the Pine trees as they are brought in the house to be decorated for Christmas. Walking to your friends houses in the night when its cold. Your nose red from the cold and all the smells of Winter. Summer is just a warm memory, Fall a pleasant thought. Winter coming in harsh and cold. Spring is just a wonderful memory that you think of on those cold and snowy days, when the world is white. Soon the days will get longer, the nights shorter and Fall and Winter will be just memories as you enjoy the new Spring days.... I have lots of Fall memories....
