I have loved this Bishop for a long time. Ive even used some clips of him in some of my YT videos. The more I learn about him, his views, his interpretations of the Bible...the more fascinated I am with him. I want to know what Atheists and Christians alike think of this man. I may not agree with every dot and tittle of what he says but I am relieved and even refreshed anytime I hear a viewpoint that sits in the middle of our religious/secular disputes. Deism, like Agnosticism, is the first step towards Atheism and/or a position that both sides can meet on...maybe not completely but, I think, happily. Bishop Spong understands the problems/the toxicity of religion yet he still calls himself a Christian and even almost a mystic. He says he wants to save Christianity and as much as we, atheists or other, see that it needs saving, Id say it would be more aptly said that he is promoting Deism and doing so in a way that points out and understands the atheistic/anti theistic reasons for being against religion. I would have no qualms with religion if it was interpreted this way and had this kind of understanding about itself...about its history. I think many if not most of us atheists have been at this level of interpretation about the Bible. This understanding of BOTH sides is a beautiful compromise. Most of Spongs criticisms are the same that led us to atheism. Unfortunately, because religion continues in its fundamental, immoral and dogmatic push into politics and into personal judgment on social issues based on their literal interpretations, I dont think its enough that this one man who is sitting squarely in the middle is enough for us to stop speaking out against religion. The hope is that religion can, at least, evolve...for the sake of mankind. My question for Bishop Spong would be to ask him how he feels about God the Father and does he believe that Jesus IS His Father? And, if so, how, with his logical/rational/moral discernment, how does God the Fathers character sit with him? How does he reconcile that? And, again, I would never wish to hurt this mans faith, nor do I think I could, Im just curious as to what his answer to that would be. Im gonna post 2 or three other videos of him and would luv to hear from both sides.
