I have lurked in this group for ages but never introduced myself, or more importantly my very special tripawd, Dickie! Dickie is an ex-racing greyhound who we brought home over five years ago when he was nearly six years old. He is cat-friendly, dog-friendly and LOVES his people! He has done a huge amount of fund-raising for the rescues that I am involved with, he is such a charmer! When he is was 8 he was diagnosed (eventually after six months of what one vet described as atypical symptoms) with osteosarcoma. We had already lost one greyhound to this wretched disease (diagnosed too late for amputation) and we doubted Dickie would cope with a front leg amputation: He is a BIG greyhound and he also has a terrible phobia of certain floor surfaces. I was though so fortunate to be surrounded by friends with experience of amputation who encouraged us to go ahead with the operation. Dickie flew through the op and the chemo and hes still here two years, four months later.....now aged 11. We know we are so very very fortunate and each day is a true blessing. On Sunday we were fundraising at the Greyhound Walks Show and entered Dickie in a very special class: The Chelsea Ambassador Cup. Chelsea was the greyhound at the heart of Greyhound Walks (her owners placed an ad in the local newspaper to see if any other local greyhound owners wanted to meet up for a walk.....this led to the foundation of Greyhound Walks and the now international Great British Greyhound Walk). The cup is awarded to the greyhound with the most calm, relaxed yet confident presence. Our amazing boy won this fabulous award and we were told that it was because of his abilities, not his disability, but also because he was so calm, relaxed and confident having overcome so much. And thats what I really wanted to share......how wonderful our tripawds are, how inspirational they are....they dont change one jot when they lose a limb, they just get on with things!
