I have never been to the “Holy Lands”. But over 50 years ago, my dad was able to take that trip. He brought back some mementos and hundreds of pictures and many, many stories. He went on and on about how impressed he was with many of the areas he visited. He was enthralled with the Garden of Gethsemane and the Red Sea. He told stories about walking down by the Jordan River and then going to 3 places that all claimed to be the tomb of our Lord. But one thing that truly impressed him was seeing the large stones that had been carved out by hand and used for the foundation of the Temple. He talked about how massive those stones were and how perfectly carved in their rectangular shape. And the Bible says that the foundation was of a “quality stone”. The Bible records that construction began in the fourth year of Solomons reign and took seven years. The labor force was incredible. See 1 Kings 5:13 and 2 Chronicles 2:2. The stones were cut from a quarry and brought to the Temple. 1 Kings 6:7 said that “no hammer or chisel or any iron tool” was heard in the temple while it was being built. Huge sections of 1 Kings (Chapters 5-8) and 2 Chronicles (Chapters 1-7) give us great detail about the construction of the Temple, the priesthood and the temple services. Dad said that all of the stone were high grade and the foundation of the Temple was solid. He said you could see the effort that was put into the type and quality of stone that would be used to build the temple of God. Enough history, now the lesson: God wanted His Temple to have a solid foundation. Today the Temple of God is our physical body. (1 Corinthians 6:19-20 – “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”) So in order to accomplish anything worthwhile in our lives we must lay a high quality foundation. Just as the original temple was just as solid as the foundation, everything else in our daily lives is going to be affected if the foundation of our life is not built with the best materials. The Bible is very clear that Jesus is the only solid foundation upon which we build everything in our lives (I Cor. 3:11). Anything else will result in a weak foundation. Person Inventory Time: Are we building on a solid foundation that will last? If not, we need to begin ASAP to use the best material for the foundation of your life. Have a great day!
