I have never even had a speeding ticket so you can imagine my horror this morning when I learned from a land owner that I was trespassing in one of my wildflower hunts. I have been to this place several times over the years and the boundary between public and private land is not really marked, but I was still mortified and apologetic about my mistake. The land owner is a very colorful character so when I answered his questions about my people and what I do for a living everything shifted. He became very excited because he said has seen me and read about me in the newspaper and that he really appreciates the work we do at the homeless shelter. From then on he treated me like a celebrity. He offered to let me park at his house and hunt for wildflowers any time. He even offered me the use of his four wheeler to go anywhere I want to on his familys 330 acres (which stretches across state lines). What ensued after that was a long conversation about my truck, his trucks and his family history, including him having to show me the solitary grave where his great grandfather is buried in the forest. I am still too horrified by my mistake ( I pride myself on knowing where I am at all times) to presume to ever go back and take him up on his offer, but it sure made for an interesting morning in the forest.
