I have no other details. From Air Force News: ONE of Air Force’s biggest maintenance communities will reunite on October 25. All past members of No. 486 Squadron are invited to gather for a reunion at Penrith Panthers Stadium, in Sydney’s greater west, to celebrate the squadron’s history. Formed in August 1946, the unit was responsible for conducting maintenance across the RAAF’s fleet of transport and air-to-air refuelling aircraft. One of the reunion organisers, WGCDR Ross Magno, said 486SQN held special prominence in Air Force history. “The RAAF transport fleet amassed a huge record of achievement from 1946 until 1999,” WGCDR Magno said. “This could not have been achieved without a technical workforce that ensured the aircraft were well maintained and airworthy.” In 1946, 486SQN was formed at RAAF Station Schofields as a dedicated maintenance workforce for C-47 Dakota transports, which at the time were flying a two-week return journey from Australia to Japan. “The service to Japan was flown without loss, partly thanks to the efforts of 486SQN,” WGCDR Magno said. “This delivered the precedent with generations of 486SQN personnel ensuring RAAF transport aircraft could be operated reliably all over the world.” For much of its history, 486SQN conducted maintenance on the C-130 A, E and H-model Hercules as well as the Boeing 707, Caribou and Metropolitan VIP aircraft. In October 1999, 486SQN was disbanded, with its workforce rejoining the RAAF transport squadrons.
