I have not seen a single monarch this season and I keep patches of milkweed and butterfly weed just outside the yard. There is also a tree patch near by where monarchs often stay during the heat of the day. Usually if I am out watering the garden and spray water into the air... it does not take long for butterflies to sense the moisture and they appear. There was a striking black and yellow butterfly which appeared today while I was watering. Giant swallowtail... it seems. pbase/cfields/image/85319118 I have dozens of butterfly weed plants in various beds, this was a very poor year for them to grow ... with barren places within usually crowded flower beds. The milkweed themselves seemed to have emerged rather late this year and I am wondering if the monarchs will appear later than normal this fall as they had back to Mexico but... I saw none this spring as they should have been heading north ... perhaps they took a different route and avoided the rainy wet weather.
