I have often posted pictures of Quail that I have taken from my yard or on walks in the mornings or evening, I Just feel these little creatures are so charming. I love the family units I have seen with Momma, Daddy and all their little babies. I have laughed at them and cried as I witnessed them mourn the death of their mate. They are special indeed. Today my sister and I went to Tahoe to meet a dear sweet friend and on the way back a little Quail darted in front of my car, I was able to miss him fortunately but pulled over slightly shaken at how close it was. Typically these little guys will play dodge with you but will fly away when you get close. This was different. As I watched, time and time again he would dart out and stand in the middle of the street refusing to move, when the car would pass he would run to the side of the street and cry, then again repeat the action time and time over. Curious I walked to the side of the street and witnessed him hovering over his deceased mate, as he stood there allowing me to witness his pain not three feet away from me. I realized this little bird no longer had a desire to live and was intentionally trying to end his sweet life. Made me sad. Having bird companions for the last 20 years I do have a passion for them as well as all living creatures and I have been privileged to hold them tenderly in my hand, to kiss their sweet beaks, to give them baths and watch them spread their wings with joy. Never have I experienced such sadness and hopelessness. I know that the bible tells us in Matthew 10: 29-31 (KJV) Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows If this be so, I know that God also holds this precious little guy in His hands and I pray that He will send him comfort and peace.
