I have often said that the reason the 120+ movies made from Stephen Kings novels suck -- and all but 4 of them DO suck, and hard -- is because his stories are crap. He regurgitates Twilight Zone episodes but makes them 900 pages long. What makes them readable is his prose: the *way* he writes. Its not what he says, its how he says it. It takes incredibly gifted filmmakers to translate that prose into equally dynamic visuals. Going the other way, I use Jackie Chans movies as counterpoint. It would be nearly impossible to capture the essence of Chans abilities in writing. To be able to capture the creativity, verve and sheer inventiveness would take a master stylist on the level of, say, Stephen King. Jackie Chan once said that his two primary influences are Bruce Lee and Charlie Chaplin. You can see that in every movie he makes. And now, finally, we have a superb overview of Chans filmmaking skills from Every Frame A Painting.
