I have often struggled between the two opposing theological trends: one is a crude literalism, the other an equally unsatisfactory liberalism. We are caught between a view of Scripture in which everything must be literally true or is merely some sort of narrative that points to some universal truths. David Atkinsons thoughtful exposition sits neatly between these two poles in that he advocates a sort of critical realism (as outlined by N T Wright) and recognises the different genres of writing in these first eleven chapters. This is a triumph of evangelical theology that I that I have thoroughly enjoyed reading. I recommend it as one of the best introductions to the book of Genesis.
