I have personal knowledge on this. As a frequent RORO passenger, I can see that all the ferry boats plying the Matnog-Samar and Liloan-Lipata routes already outlived their usefulness in Japan or other countries and were refurbished to service Filipino passengers, endangering their lives. Why is the Philippine government allowing this? MV Maharlika 2 just 30 years old? Of course not. Back in the 1980s, I was already frequent passenger of Maharlika 2 when it was still plying Matnog-San Isidro, Samar channel. And it was already a second-hand ship at that time. I remember, it was re assigned to the Liloan-Lipata route in the late 1990s. Maybe it is time to ban the importation of used ships; let us not put passengers lives at risk. And the concerned government agencies should retire ferry boats when needed and not let a catastrophe do it for them. As we can see, Mother Nature cuts very harshly.
