I have posted on this site some stories about my growing up next to the Grier family where there were 12 kids. This one involves my friend Bud with who I had many good times. Out school was a one room school which was heated with a large pot belly stove which sat in the middle of the room. Different men in the community would bring wagon loads of wood to,school so we always had a roaring fire in the winter. To keep the air from being so dry inside , the teacher, a Ms Davis who was a very nice older lady, always kept a gallon tin can on top of the stove filled with water and there was a constant steam coming from this can. The school was never locked and nothing was ever missing that I know about. One Saturday Bud and i were wandering around and we stopped and went inside the school to keep out of the cold for a few minutes. Some way we got the idea that it might fun to pea in the water can on top of the stove........so we did. Monday morning came and it was still very cold so Ms Davis soon had a rip roaring fire going the stove and presently the usual steam came from the can on the stove. But this time it had a horrible odor, in fact it was worse than you can imagine, it burned your eyes, Some of the little kids were crying so Ms Davis got some paper or a rag or something and proceeded to remove the can from the stove. But when she got about halfway to,the door something happened and she lost her grip and spilled the content of the can all over the floor. I am sitting there wondering what our fate would if anyone every found out it was us but we never found out because we certainly never told anyone. This even became subject to discussion in the community and there was lots of speculation about who it could have been. I dont think anyone ever suspected two,small boys thought up this dastardly act and pulled,it off. It was not so funny all day because my seat was by a window and we had to keep the windows open the rest of the day. If my old man had found out I was involved I am sure I would not be here telling this today .
