I have raved about the Singapore health care system before and promoted the David Goldhill book. Well, heres a book length online research study from the Brookings Institution, backing up all the same points. Singapore is a nation as wealthy and healthy as our own, but spends just 4 percent of its GDP on health care, compared to our 17% or more. They do it by putting the purchasing power in the hands of patients. In practical terms, that means an $83k angioplasty in America costs $13k in Singapore. It turns out that prices matter when the money is in the hands of the people buying the care.
