I have received some information from the City regarding the replacement of the picnic shelter in Ft George Park. I am told the cost to replace is around $1.5 million dollars. The reason for the high costs are due to a number of items like consultant fees, project management, archeological oversight and taxes. The status of the Park has significantly changed since the last picnic shelter was constructed. The Park now falls under the Provincial Heritage Conservation Act, which means that for any construction that involves excavation, the City must have an archeologist on site to supervise the excavation portion of the work. I am only just receiving this information but do know the call has gone out to a large lumber company for help and it will not stop there. I have also received some emails where people are already looking for sponsorships on their own. As it stands there are no plans to fund this in the capital plan for next year but what it boils down to is a matter of community priorities.
