I have recently completed the course outline for the art course I will teach. Here is the abstract: Welcome to the Gordon Drysdale method of acrylic painting tecniques. Duration of classes is eight weeks, one night of three hours per each week with a total of 24 hours. Cost of the 24 hours of classes, to be announced, pending location confirmation. I may offer a pro-rated extension, should any student require more instruction on their individual project. These classes are not affiliated with any institute of higher learning in the provincial education system and do not provide any formal certification. The intent and purpose of these classes is to share the painting techniques I have developed personally through decades of self education. General Materials List- Acrylic (PLEASE label your materials with your name) Bring the following materials to the first class: PAINTS (Acrylic: Try not to buy student grade paints. I would rather you purchased small tubes of quality artist’s paint such as Tri-Art, Grumbacher, Winsor-Newton or Golden) Sorry, Im not a fan of liquitex paint. Your preference is fine with me. Large tube Titanium White (optional) Small tube essentials Cadmium Red (Hue) (middle) Cadmium Yellow (Hue) (middle) French Ultramarine Blue Cobalt Blue Hue Cerulean blue Windsor blue Cadmium Orange (Hue) Sap Green or the darkest green you can find Dioxazine Purple Raw Umber Burnt Umber Burnt Sienna Raw Sienna Red Oxide Pthalo green Chromium oxide green (Chrome green) Alizarin or Napthol Crimson Yellow Ochre/Yellow Oxide Cadmium Yellow (middle) Hansa – Barium or Primary Yellow Ivory or Mars Black Lamp Black If a couple of acrylic colours speak to you, buy them White Gesso (no smaller than 8oz.) - gesso can be used as a mixing white Acrylic Retarder Acrylic polymer medium (gloss or matt), liquid format not gel Golden Glazing liquid (gloss or satin) BRUSHES Brush range in size from #0 to #24 - At least 6 square brushes, 2 small, 2 medium, 2 large, One “00” small brush- The size of your brushes (large, medium and small) should be relative to the size of the surface you are working on. I recommend, also having a variety of shaped ( oval, angled, round ) medium sized brushes and a few small sized ones. Also, please have a 1 inch brush. Bring either natural bristle brushes, or acrylic brushes for acrylic paint. Whatever is your preference. You should have at least one fine brush for details. Long bristle white taclon is my personal preference. PAINTING SURFACES For the first class, one masonite hard board 1/8 (non-tempered) preferred, but not always available. 1/4 is too heavy and warps. (Tempered) is smooth on both surfaces, (non-tempered) is smooth on one side and knurled on the opposite side. No smaller than 12 x 14. 16” x 12” is good, or larger if you prefer. You may pre-coat your panel at home with at least (4) four coats of Gesso on the painting surface and a 3- 4 wide corner to corner X on the back to counteract warpage. Alternate the brush strokes horizontal on the first coat and vertical on the next coat, lightly sanding between dried coats and repeating for (4) coats. It is also recommended to paint the edges to prevent separation of board fibres. The remainder of painting surface supplies shall be discussed in class. MISCELLANEOUS Water container (large yoghurt containers or tin cans) Palette pad - larger than small, I use a recycled aluminum pie plate Brush cleaner soap Newsprint to keep paint off tables. Notebook and pen for notes, your option Metal Pallet knife Rag in a plastic bag Appropriate painting shirt Value scale Pencil HB (recommend H or 2H) Eraser (white) Masking tape (recommend Frog Tape) I highly recommend a Masterson Sta-Wet Painter’s Pal Palette 9” x 12” this is worth every penny. It will keep your acrylic paint wet and active for hours. Small spray bottle (optional) Ruler Exacto knife Your photo references for the painting you wish to create. Should best be super clear 8 X 10 enlargements. What we will cover Approaches to Contemporary Acrylic Painting The class will focus on the study of still life or landscape and nature. Students will work from life as well as photo references. I will expand on what tecniques and image sources I use to develop a complete composition by marrying a number of image sources. I will show a few short cuts many professional artists take to maximize the efficient use of their easle time. I will demonstrate the use of unconventional tools available to any artist. We will create, outside the box, and learn how the end justifies the means in creating a saleable subject. This course is designed for beginners and students who have taken their painting skills to an advanced level and now wish to develop a body of work and may have the goal of exhibiting in a gallery. Each term, a number of paintings may be completed with emphasis on the pace and finishing skills required to develop an art piece. Students will look at how to successfully compose, build and finish a painting. An overview of the fundamentals of painting will be covered. Focusing on drawing and painting, the class will learn to create light and shadow using a full colour palette. Students will learn to control the elements of painting and create strong compositions in order to maximize their expression with the medium. I will discuss painting details and creating more comprehensive images from your photo subject. Students will further their paint handling ability and learn about the blending of edges and how to use colour and value to create the illusion of form. I have developed a system of creating sharp detail, using an Exacto knife. I will discuss why and how this technique was developed. I will discuss composition and perspective with a new look at perception, layout, and element component placement. I will demonstrate the artistic link between music and imagry. Creating a highly detailed finished work of art can be challenging and time consuming. Well look at how to successfully start and finish a painting. You will learn that patience is the key. I will explain my theory of development sequence in the process of moving from begining to completing a detailed image. Students will begin with a preliminary sketch, choose a composition and make a value and a colour study of their subject. From their studies, they will put it all together to create a well-executed finished work of art. The subject of study will vary according to individual interests. It will be at the discretion of each student whether or not they would like to approach one identical subject, or work on their own supplied image. Those wishing to work on independent projects will also be accommodated. For each painting, time will be spent setting up the subject matter and developing an individualized approach to the work, addressing the artistic direction that the student is moving towards. Much individual attention will be given to each student. Students will learn problem-solving techniques for painting issues that arise through the study of composition, perspective, fore/mid/background, colour mixing, contrast and sense of depth. Time will be spent on positive and supportive group critique on a weekly basis. My personal method of painting involves more than just a few hours per creation. I have logged between 200 and 350 easle hours on a single, large, painting. I want you to understand that we wont be creating Bob Ross style happy little tree paintings. We will take the time that is worthy of the acurately detailed finished piece. Colour Theory in Painting Colour theory class is designed for artists of all levels who want to learn how to mix any colour in acrylic paint as well as how to express intended feelings through the use of colour. Based on Munsell colour theory, it introduces three properties of colour - hue, value, and chroma - which will be applied to paint real life objects or human figures. A wide range of subtlety in tones of objects or flesh will be studied. There will be various exercises to solve more complex problems such as how to control the relationship between different colours as well as colour composition. Those wishing to work on independent projects will also be accommodated. For each painting, time will be spent setting up the subject matter and developing an individualized approach to the work, addressing the artistic direction that the student is moving towards. The Business of art Marketing and publishing I will discuss the process and economics of taking your art to a new level of marketing and income stream. We will look at the relationship between a subject painting, its intended market and its appropriate final display location. Well discuss the relationship between the image and the size of the finished Limited Edition as it affects the saleability. You will be informed of the economics of multiple image printing and the why in your choice of printing companies, also known as lithographers. Well discuss the difference between Giclee prints and lithographed printing. I will cover the technical process of taking your original image and creating an edition printed for multiple sale, through this variety of approaches, materials, and duplication methods. I will discuss the need to price your work for profit and saleability. We will look at a number of marketing approaches, packaging, and presentation.
