I have seen a lot and been through a lot in my life but it has only been in the last 20 or so years that I have encountered depression in two people that are very close to me. Im not going to name them, that is up to them to tell the world if they want to, not me.....and that I believe could be one little reason why its not treated with any sort of urgency. Its still seen as an illness that shouldnt be talked about, mental illness still has a stigma attached to it and yet where is the shame? There is no shame in having your wires short circuit for a while in your head! People say they are depressed when in fact they are a tad fed up because they have broken a nail or something. Im depressed! is bandied around as an everyday statement by people who have no idea what it is to be depressed. Thank goodness, I dont have any idea either, I can never truly understand what it is like to be depressed, I can listen, hold hands, try and help, even make all the endless appointments (which usually end up against a brick wall) but I cant fully understand what depression is like. It was described to me once as being in a glass box, you can see whats going on around you but you cant get out of the box to join in. To all you true sufferers of depression, I salute you, you are the ones that battle day after day with unseen forces, then one day, you emerge from it all into a bright world of sunshine, hoping that you never have to go through the dark days again, you are strong, you can make it. The really bad thing is, the lack of awareness and even after all the help in the world, you still have to make those final steps yourself, nobody can help you do that. For some its just a step too far but thankfully for the people I know, it was a step in the right direction and both got through the depression stronger and more aware people. The mental health help in this Country is appalling, more needs to be done because there is no discrimination, rich or poor, it can affect any one of us. So think on, next time you say Im depressed! do you really mean, you are fed up or just a tad pissed off?
