I have seen clips of Pele, hours of footage of Maradona, Cruyff, Laudrup and Ronaldo, and have watched every significant step that Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have taken towards becoming all time greats.. Ronaldinho, Scholes, Pirlo, Xavi, Iniesta, Gerrard..I have seen them all, and even seven minutes of Beckenbauer.. But I have never seen anyone as beautiful, graceful, elegant and transcendent as Zidane. Not ONE player comes close to Zidane in any romantic aspect of the beautiful game. No one in the history of football has had better technique, ball control, intelligence and skill. Zidane is quite literally indescribable; how can you quantify his ethereal abilities or compare him to any other player, when none have played the game at a level proximate to him? He was on another plane, a whole different level of intelligence, beyond the limits of our comprehension. If football is truly a universal language, then Zidane must be the only one to have attained perfection of its dialect; he must surely be the only native speaker of this language that we all attempt to dearly to learn. He transcends the beauty one derives from a superb goal or a stunning move, both of which he has created in abundance. Zidane made the means more beautiful than the end, and for this he will forever remain the greatest mind ever to have played the game. Religion is a pointless, stupid and utterly flawed idea. However, if football is indeed a religion, then there bas never been a more God-like figure than Zidane.
