“I have seen first hand the impact that community doulas have in promoting and supporting breastfeeding among vulnerable women living in the inner city of Elizabeth, New Jersey. Between July 2012 and June 2013, the community doulas in Mothering Mothers served 88 women who gave birth during these 12 months. 100% of these 88 mothers were breastfeeding at 6 weeks postpartum. When discharged from the program at 3 months postpartum, 93% were still breastfeeding and of these 66% were still exclusively breastfeeding. The prenatal education and the face-to-face support provided in the first 24-36 hours after birth by community doulas enabled and empowered the mothers in our program to successfully breastfeed much longer than other WIC clients in the City of Elizabeth, NJ.” ~ Comment on HC One’s Statement on Critical Providers of Breastfeeding Support Services
