I have seen much criticism of the premier of the show American Blackout. From my perspective, despite any shortfalls in the storyline, the underlying message is to be prepared to sustain your family for at least some reasonable amount of time. At one point in the show a father was willing to injure or kill a neighbor over a single can of peaches. Seeing the hunger in your children’s eyes can drive people to do things they would have never imagined. Do you have something set aside? If not what is you excuse? No one is telling you to have a year’s worth of food by tomorrow, but you can start today. Money is tight for many people, but it should be reasonable to pick up an extra case of water and some canned goods next time you are at the grocery store. Clip some coupons, skip eating out this week, or consider cutting back on the ultimate cable package that is running you several hundred dollars a month. There are so many things you can do to be prepared, but having access to clean water and food will prevent you from eating out of a dumpster will go a long way toward surviving a short term crisis.
