I have seen this so many times and it really annoys me! How many people who have made a success of their lives had the chance to be involved in scouts and brownies or youth clubs? Places where they could learn independence and skills that they would value for life. Not everyone is given the kind of parenting and home that can teach them these lessons. If we want our young people to grow up to have backbone, we need to be volunteering at and supporting the organisations that can teach it!
