I have served my country, formally, in two different capacities: as a State Traffic Officer with the California Highway Patrol (joining when Ronald Reagan was Governor of the state...and on through gubernatorial administrations both Republican and Democrat), as as a Special Duty Intelligence Officer (Aviation Intelligence) in the United States Navy Reserve, serving under both Presidents James Earl Carter and Ronald Reagan. Of course, I am retired today, living in the beautiful and friendly country of Nicaragua. Shortly, after arriving here last year, I was invited to join the American Legion. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Legion From its inception in 1919, the American Legion has been an organization committed to supporting veterans, community and country. It was NOT ever meant to be a partisan organization, advancing or encouraging any political persuasion over the others. I fully support the mission of the American Legion. Legion.org I recall well, both occasions when I was sworn in as an Officer, taking upon myself the Oath of Office, to support and defend the Constitiution of the United States of America (as well as the Constitution of the State of California, on one of those occasions). Certainly, I have not always supported the political agenda of any political party in its entirety. I have taken exception, as a citizen of the United States of America and/or the State of California, to some of the actions and policies of many of our leaders through the course of my lifetime. Yet, I also realize that to defend the Constitution of the United States of America is to defend ALL aspects of the Constitution...the Bill of Rights, the other Constitutional Amendments AND the Constitutional Officers. Our Constitution provides the method to remove or replace any of those that do not represent and/or legislate the will of the people. Those two methods are free elections, open to all citizens of the United States of America, and impeachment of any officer that is accused, tried and convicted of high crimes or treason. I support all Constitutional approaches to our self-governance. I can and will not ever participate in, encourage, sustain or support any language, discussion, publication or conversation that calls for the unlawful overthrow of our government or harm, violence, or disrespect to any Constitutional office or officer. I consider it a privilege to pay my taxes, even though I do not agree with every expenditure. I believe in supporting and maintaining the public good and the welfare of the people. I believe we have the solemn, perhaps even sacred, obligation and duty to VOTE for that person or policy which we believe and understand to be right and best for the majority of the citizens...or to vote against that person or issue which we do not believe and understand to be representative of the people. And, once that vote is counted, certified or ratified, we have the duty to support the mind and will of the American people. Today, even now, I consider myself still sworn to uphold, defend and preserve the law of our land...the Constitution of the United States and the Constitutions of the fifty states.
