I have so tried not to comment on this too much as I just dont have the energy to debate. But I seriously am confused about this boycott Black Friday thing (and I dont even shop on Black Friday to be honest). Im not understanding how it helps or strengthens the plight of Michael Brown or cops using deadly force. See the way my mind is set up, ppl boycott things that make sense to boycott, i.e black ppl couldnt ride in the front of the bus, so we stop riding the bus. Black ppl couldnt get served at your restaurant, so we sat in ur restaurants til u did. Here in Detroit back in 1999, I was arrested protesting the lack of police protection on our way to school in the morning as a series of young girls had been raped that year all on their way to school. We marched to the police stations. We protest in front of city hall. We asked the hard questions and we refused to take no. Soon after, not only were there more cops on the street in the morning, but there is now at Detroit Public School safety division that specifically patrols the neighborhoods near the schools. See those boycotts and forms of protest made sense to the cause at hand. Now Im all for black dollars going back into the black community, but how does consumerism have a direct effect to what happened in Ferguson? Did a Target or Kohls shoot Michael Brown? Besides, the citizens of Ferguson werent too worried about black dollars in their community when they were setting businesses on fire and stealing and looting. I didnt see no Walmart up in smoke. Shole didnt see a Sallys Beauty Supply burning. How about we start to think for ourselves and not just jump on what appears to be the hottest idea without really thinking it through or having a realistic goal/purpose, just because someone says we should. Boycotting Black Friday wont stop folks from sitting at home and pushing Pay Now on Cyber Monday. And it surely wont change our judicial system. We MUST come up with a better solution cuz this one aint gone cut it. Lets devise a plan that DIRECTLY helps the cause, not one emotionally created just to say we did something.
