I have some strong political opinions about President Jimmy Carter, but all of the negatives I might put on his ledger are wiped out by his work against Guinea Worm. Almost singlehandedly he took on the challenge of trying to wipe out this parasite, which used to affect over a hundred thousand people and now affects less than 200 and will soon hopefully be eradicated altogether joining the very short list with Smallpox of human diseases made extinct. It is an uncommon thing for a person to be so effective in such an obscure and difficult quest especially one that impacts people that most of his friends & family will never know. Hes helping a population far, far from his home in Georgia fight a terrible curse that most Americans have never heard of and have virtually no chance of ever contracting. Lets hope that 2015 is the year we can feel good about making something extinct. And lets give a toast to President Carter for being one of the most exceptional people on the planet.
