I have some very distressing news to share with my friends and family on Facebook. When I started Fontys University of Applied Sciences here in The Netherlands I was one of a handful of English students on the whole campus (there was five of us I believe). A close friend of mine has made it apparent to me that in the new batch of alumni coming to Fontys this month, one of them is a Mackem...... Of course I am distraught, and my initial thought was to throw in the towel and leave Fontys with immediate effect. I have since composed myself however, and as the bigger man I will try my level best to bridge the divide severed between Tyne and Wear. We will conquer boundaries, build bridges where bridges have never been built before, and above all, no horses will be harmed in The Netherlands when it comes to the Tyne/Wear derby. Its taken a lot to come to terms with the horrific news that a Mackem is coming to Holland... but Im ready.
