I have something I need to get off my chest. How many of you know an addict? The first time they use, its a choice. After that, theyve lost the choice and it becomes a disease. They will spend their last dime, as well as someone elses, just to stay high. They will steal anything that isnt bolted down and sell everything they own. They begin to steal from loved ones and family and hate it but the drug is too strong. They go from being loving, wonderful and caring to someone nobody knows. They lie, steal, sneak, hide things, make promises they cant keep even though they have every intention of keeping them. Getting clean is the easy part. Staying clean is an entirely different challenge that a lot of addicts never achieve. These addicts are sick. Its an illness. Most want to quit and fail. They need support and encouragement even when they slip. Im sure there is an addict or recovering addict in your life, whether you know it or not. So please dont judge until youve walked in an addicts shoes or in the shoes of the people who love them. Its a long, bumpy and very painful ride.
