I have sometimes been challenged about the value of sports in general, and to a religious person, in particular. Among the benefits, are the unifying of a city, at a time when people are less connected to their fellow citizens than ever before. This years Red Sox personified that, none more than David Ortiz. From the day of the bombing at the marathon and on, he and his teammates made it clear that they were no mere hired guns who happened to play in Boston. The passionate fans of the Sox responded to that. The impromptu gestures at The Boston Marathon finishing line, during the victory parade showed how much Ortiz and his teammates get it. This picture, and the accompanying story are a great postscript to the year.
