I have spent few days playing with my new Jolla phone based on Sailfish OS (Maemo/Meego follower) and these are my practical experiences: + really nice GUI with a completely new way of gesture-based control (I have never seen something like this before - there are no control buttons at all, everything is controlled by swiping to all directions) - is this future of UX? + binary compatible with approx. 90% of all Android applications (especially commercial proprietary Android applications do not work, but most of them work fluently) - I have tested Yandex.Store, F-Droid and Aptoide stores) + no rooting at all (you just click you are the developer and want to be root:) + quite fast (have no problem with speed at all) And negative experiences: - I have expected some special security features (because of Linux underlying OS), but there are not really ones (no full disk encryption, native email applications do not support PGP, nor S/MIME, no Threema/TextSecure alternative, no ZRTP-aware SIP clients, ...of course it possible to install/use emulated Android applications like K9-email, TextSecure or Redphone...) - native browser is really simply (but you can install Android Firefox or Android Chromium browser) - it is possible to install own Android launcher (like Nova or Go Launcher) and use it, but I didnt find a way how to set it as a default launcher - there are only a few hundreds of native applications (on Android / iOS there are over 1 million ones!), so dont expect the application robustness - as in most phones, there is no opensource gsm stack Conclusion: Jolla/Sailfish is probably a great hipster-phone because of great design/UX, but it is not definitely focused on security / privacy protection. The platform is still very exotic and not very used, so it will take a while for malware/viruses/exploits creators to compromise its security. If you just want a phone with beautiful simple applications (including Facebok / Twitter), this phone is just for you :)
