I have spent many, many hours in service to the College that I love, the College of Charleston. I have served on the Alumni Board, the Foundation Board, the Business Administration and Economics Advisory Board, and multiple terms on the Cougar Club including a term as President. To say that I have been close to my school, particularly close to athletics would be an understatement. At this moment, I am almost overwhelmed with disgust and sadness over the mess we again find ourselves in with the schools basketball coach. We have had so many amazing coaches...coaches who have developed student athletes into fine young men and women, coaches who have been a great credit to our school...coaches who I am please to call friends...coaches who I would gladly have entrusted my children to. Unfortunately, once again, it appears that we have a basketball coach who in my opinion is not the kind of individual that we need to serve at The College. I have heard a great deal of audio...audio that made me sick to my stomach thinking that student athletes and staff were addressed in that fashion, but one of the worst quotes that I have read attributed to this coach when addressing a student player is “Why are you getting bad grades. This school isn’t even hard. When you graduate, you might as well burn your degree because it’s not worth anything.” President Benson did a terrible disservice to our school on his LAST DAY as President by not doing the right thing...the right thing for the school, the right thing for the alums, but mostly the right thing for the student athletes who are of utmost importance...Unfortunately for the Colleges President of 3 days, Glenn McConnell, he MUST do the right thing and send this man on his way. The students deserve better...
