I have such a hard time understanding how the next child abduction, murder, political scandal, fallen clergy, abandoned, abused and neglected child, rape victim, corporate embezzler, poacher, corrupt cop, official or church secretary, out of control celeb, drug dealer, drug abuser, drug mule, drunk driver, texter who kills and maims, and national secrets peddler is chosen by the media to flog our sensibilities, emotions and values with next. Maybe instead of how miserable Mr. Zimmer should feel or how race is or isn’t part of this story what we should really be discussing is how far out of balance we are that this one case over shadowed nearly all of the other victims and criminals. Maybe the discussion needs to be less about divisions and more about looking for compatibilities and strengths rather than confrontation and what’s owed me. I am beyond encouraged that if nothing else positive comes out of the last few weeks, it seems communication won out over the urge to use an unwanted outcome as an excuse to become the next story. There is hope and I think part of it stems from our society starting to learn how to cope with the onslaught of all forms of instant media. We are bombarded with so much so quickly these days that ability to absorb and logically analyze all that we take in takes some serious collective skills. I have to remove myself from all the stimuli from time to time or I lose perspective on my responsibilities and obligations that others depend on. Also not easy to do.
