I have such fond memories of Super Mario 64. It felt so wonderful and mysterious. There were so many seemingly endless secrets and puzzles to solve. You were given a short clue as to how to obtain each power star so that you could eventually save Princess Peach from Bowser, the evil King of the Koopas. I felt so rewarded with each star I obtained. One hidden secret that sticks out to me is the first time I found the secret slide level. WHOA! I thought this room had nothing in it! You mean there was stage behind this window? Oh and lets not forget the first time I got the Wing Cap. I was wondering why that light was shining from the ceiling for a while. Then I looked up at it. Suddenly I was transported to this hidden level and soaring through the clouds! WHOOOOA! How did I get here? I was being hit by surprises and excitement left, right and center. All I had were magazines, pictures and speculations during a time when I didnt have the internet to spoil it for me :O Its-a me, Mario! That was the first time we heard Charles Martinet, the voice behind the portly plumber, utter that famous line. The game featured fully rendered 3D characters, environments and 360-degree analogue control. It felt like anywhere you could see, you could run, jump or blast to. It had a nonlinear freedom that wasnt seen at the time. Believe it or not, this was the first game to feature a free camera system that could be manipulated separately from the character. Being able to change the direction you are looking in may be industry standard these days but back then it was a brand new way to play. Games before 1996 were tied to fixed angles. Really puts into perspective just how young video games are, especially in comparison to other forms of entertainment like film which had already hit multiple milestones decades prior. Super Mario 64 isnt even 20 years old yet! The fact that it was the first to implement these gameplay elements, yet still holds up as a fully functional game today, is a real achievement. A true revolution and a very important part of gaming history that influenced so many games to follow. #tbt #throwbackthursday #SuperMario64 #Nintendo #N64 https://youtube/watch?v=a0KxaCBXSxs
