I have the greatest admiration for parents working to break - TopicsExpress

I have the greatest admiration for parents working to break negative cycles. Alissa shares her success: I wanted to let you know that Im loving using RIE (guided by your blogs and books) as I raise my toddler (15mth girl). Ive always felt nervous about having a toddler (I was very comfortable with a newborn) as I didnt want to smack (despite family pressure that its the only way). Ive always known boundaries are very important but felt a little lost as to how to set and enforce boundaries with such a young girl. I realise now that my discomfort and fear came from my lack of understanding - I wasnt acknowledging that she could understand my boundaries and choose her actions. I wasnt acknowledging that she was her own little person. In the last month Ive been actively putting RIE parenting into practice, Im careful with my words, explaining in advance and trying not to fix everything but sportscast instead. Im extra excited this week because Ive had heaps of little triumphs. One of which is that when at dinner at a friends house my daughter was given cheese to eat. Not wanting her to ruin their couches I gave her the limit that she was not allowed inside with the cheese. After several attempts on her behalf to get inside, each of which I blocked the path and calmly restated the limit, I was so excited to watch her walk to the table, place her cheese on the table and then walk calmly inside to play. No power play, no punishment, just calm boundary. A small success but so exciting! And wonderful to hear from our friends what a well behaved and delightful little girl we have! Thank you for your help and for empowering me to face a time I had expected to struggle greatly with. My new book offers a complete guide to providing boundaries with love and respect.
