I have the impression solar PV is not as great as some of the green enthusiasm over it, because: far lower capture efficiency than solar thermal; mining rare Indium and Gallium not actually globally sustainable; cost-effectiveness at substituting for coal powered electricity low compared to renewable alternatives especially because of supply peaking out of phase with demand peaks; and the high costs of buffering/ storage. People who actually know about this, Carla Denyer Rodrigo McKinley Comas 1 World Solar Ltd, please would you mind quickly pointing me to some quality links or giving me a summary opinion? Ive heard and read that commercial solar PV designs and efficiencies are improving faster than expected recently, but is it enough yet to change the advice that any building which a) needs hot water or heating and b) has space for a thermal store tank, should prioritise solar thermal over pv if it cant afford or doesnt have space for both? This is both for personal curiosity and might be important that I should know for a job Ive just applied for. Thanks!!
