I have the pleasure to introduce to you ACADEMIC CLINIC and how it is helping students to improve in their academic performance. The programme is dubbed ‘The Magic Ingredient That Every Learner Needs.’ We first met Raymond Andrew Olewe in August 2010 during our maiden Academic Clinic in Rawa C.D.C., Siaya County. He was in class 6 at Sinaga Primary School and had scored 292 in term 2 exams in that year. We took him, together with 29 others, through the clinic and he set his eyes to score 382 marks in KCPE and aspired to make it to one of the existing national schools then. He also said his dream career was to be an Accountant. In 2011 we met with Ray among others for another Academic Clinic to review progress. He had moved up scoring 302 marks in the concluded term 2 exams. From the review diagnosis we gave him timely tips on how to move higher towards his goals. He retained his targeted KCPE marks and career goal as he had set them in the previous Academic Clinic. In August 2012 we met with him for a critical Academic Clinic where we did a final review before he went out to strike his first set of goals. He was about to sit for his KCPE. He had risen to 317 marks in term 2 exams. We helped him with ways and approaches to maximize on his strongholds and eliminate his weak areas. Besides, his peer Lucky Lionel Obanda when called upon to speak, challenged him to“work on your goal to join a better school than mine and the worst that I can expect you to join is Sawagongo”. This Lionel had in the first Academic Clinic set his ambition to be a pilot going through Sawagongo High School. As at that clinic he was falling below the marks needed to gain entrance into his choice school by about 80 marks. Lucky eventually scored 349 marks in KCPE and had made it into his school of choice even as he then challenged Ray during that particular clinic. Today Ray is in St. Patrick’s Iten High School, a national school as he had desired. He made it there by scoring 387marks. This was 5 marks more than the target he had set for himself earlier. Academic Clinic works. Of this we are sure. It has been tried and tested and the results all around are so excellent. But what is Academic Clinic? The vision for the Academic Clinic is Influencing attitude towards excellent performance. We are convinced that none of the learners in primary and secondary schools as well as colleges can perform dismally if they own a set of attitude that is positive towards their subjects, teachers and learning institution. So during the clinic we influence them to realign and internalize this positive attitude through various activities, games and videos. It is also at this stage that we lead each participant to see themselves as they really are through the Self Awareness session. Secondly, we then focus them towards a target in their academic journey letting them identify their specific career goals. That also involves selecting the secondary school and or college of choice to go through towards attaining this career goal. We then help them to set specific long term and short term subject targets using our given SMART chart model. Thirdly, we assist them to put up and utilize study tools and techniques that are very useful in propelling them towards their targets. The core tool is the personal study time table that is based on each ones strong and weak areas as identified during the goal setting phase. The study techniques that we expose them to include: How to make effective revision notes; How to select and answer essay questions or multiple choice questions as the case may be; How to reduce anxiety and panic before, during and after exams and; how to plan and balance time for different questions during an exam. At the end of the every first clinic, we are always faced with a package of hidden counselling or guidance issues from the participants. We often explore and recommend ways of handling some of the cases that we unearth to the concerned parties. This gives Academic Clinic a great holistic touch that boosts individual discipline as well. The results from our beneficiaries are encouraging. These include individuals and institutions. Bishop Abiero Girls Magwar Secondary in Kisumu County posted a mean score of 5.107 in the 2012 KCSE results after 3 clinics as compared to 4.05 in 2011 hence moving from C- to C. It is now amazing to see them doing their study work diligently without being followed. We want you to take the rest of the school through the clinic at the end of July. This is what the school stakeholders all need and will pay for”. He reported this to us six weeks after the first candidates’ class clinic had been done.
