I have this genetic thing where when I get stressed out I just fall asleep. I have a theory that its some sort of defense/escape mechanism. After we got back to his hospital room last night, got him settled, and I sat down I crashed hard! So, heres the latest: surgery went really well. Everybody keeps telling me how smelly the infected, FOOTBALL-SIZED blood clot the surgeon cleaned out of his belly was. For medical professionals to still be talking about the stench today, it must have been really bad. He is in a lot more pain from this one and is getting pretty heavy narcotics hourly. He has an ileus, but the surgeon thinks that will resolve itself. (For my non-medical friends: that means a part of his small bowel isnt working, so he cant poop or fart and it causes his abdomen to get pretty tight and distended which means more pain). As Im writing this I can hear a slight wheeze when he breathes, so Ill keep an eye on that, but I have a much better feeling about things today. He just needs to rest, keep the pain under control, start farting again (Ive wished for that more times in two weeks than I EVER thought I would), not get pneumonia, and have a few days of IV antibiotics. Honestly, I can never exactly put a name to how I know when somebody is really sick, its just a look that a person has and a gut instinct that I get. I dont get it often, but Im usually right. Yesterday- my guts were screaming that if somebody didnt do something soon, I was going to lose my best friend. Today, he is still really sick, but my gut is telling me the crisis has passed.
