I have this instinctive idea that he gave us the same topic so that he can juxtapose our two works and measure us against each other. I was treated like that at my undergraduate school. In one of my economics class, the professor gave the two of us the same topic (Patent at the USPTO) and we researched about patents. She chose diaper patents, I chose auto anti-theft lock device. I dont even remember what I wrote now. I really dont care about the destination or outcome any more. Going forward with one step ahead is of paramount importance to me. My law school experience is so terrible cause everybody gives me hard time. I am so glad there is no great-graduate school after this graduate level school. There are great grandfather, great-great-grand father, great-great-great grandfather. But I will be done with schools after law school. Maybe I may pursue a Ph.D. in computer science but it will be purely for my pleasure, no pressure. I spend many decades in schools. I am not sure what that non-American kid is so obsessed with getting A at law school cause with that foreign accent, I would not hire him, unless he proves to compensate for other better qualities. His siding/teaming up with a native speaker wont get you anywhere cause as a lawyer, if you get help from another lawyer, you risk conflict of interest and you have split your lawyer fee with that person, and you dont want to see him to get promoted instead of you at the same law firm even though you two are partners. But its still a learning process and we are sympathetic and supportive with each other. He is a LLM student anyway, so he will not be measured against ourselves. But his serious look just indicates me that he is out of touch with reality. As for me, I do my best and the rest of my career will be taken care of. ..lined up.. The competition is hard enough. We are like race horses who eyes are blocked sideways so that we can only pay attention to the forward journey. We cannot afford to look who is next to us.
