I have to copy and paste my daughter-n-law Shiri Bilik Wolfs insightful and sensible comment: I generally feel compelled to proclaim my left-wing bona fides on social media, including on the issue of Israel, and I continue to stand with my many friends in Israel and abroad who have called for calm and tolerance from the Israeli government and people. In ordinary times, I am more concerned with making sure that my fellow Jews and Israelis strive towards the principles of justice and morality that I believe our culture stands for than with pointing out how justified we are in waging this never-ending war. But right now I feel like some attention must be paid to the nihilistic cynicism of the Gazan leadership -- so-called leaders who tell their people to ignore the warnings of the Israeli army to vacate a home prior to an attack, who advocate women and children martyr themselves so the world can see them acting as human shields against the Israeli enemy, who purposely target large, populated cities when they can target military installations that are much closer, who refuse to pay their employees salaries while spending millions on missiles and propaganda, like this lovely childrens program. I am the first to criticize Israel for its boorish and idiotic foreign policy, but there is a different kind of asymmetry going on here than the kind most of the world is focusing on. As an Israeli, as a sister and a cousin and a granddaughter to people who have spent much of the past few nights and days in bomb shelters, as a person who cares about truth and justice, I have to speak up about this, too.
